I honestly hate the fact that I am a supporter of St. Kilda Football Club. Have a glance at this questionable promotion and try to understand my pain. Perhaps if they spent less time practicing their voices the club may have won one of the three flags they were involved in between 2009-10.
Never far from the media spotlight everyone is constantly aware of all the goings on at St. Kilda. Whether it be setting a dwarves on fire, relations with unaccompanied minors or simply getting your kit off for a photo, the Saints are nothing if not entertaining.
Now please don’t get me wrong, I love the Saints. The day Gary Abblet Sr retired I became disaffected with the Geelong Cats and switched my allegiances ( a fantastic choice considering their success). We almost got there. So so close. So close that a swing from the left boot of Steven Milne could have won our first flag since 1966. And now, a mere three years on from being at the pinnacle of the AFL, the long suffering supporters are looking at a future of mediocrity and poor results.
This horrible realisation is now dawning on the players as well. Club legends in Koschitzke, Milne and (the not-so-legendary) Blake have all retired. Our best players are leaving or a have already left for greener pastures. It was an end of an era when Luke Ball left for the Pies, it really hurt when Goddard left to play finals footy with the Bombers (lol). The Hawks snatched up one of the best the young ruckman in the league, for whom they traded a player who hardly got a game for the premiers this season. I mean, come on. This morning I woke up on my last day of university to find that Nick Dal Santo has officially become a Kangaroo. Thanks for all the memories.
So this is my plea to the AFL, the media and every other club that isn’t St .Kilda – just leave us alone for a while. We’ve been through enough. Please just let us rebuild in peace. I can’t make any promises that we will avoid controversies next year, but we’ll do our best. So just forget about the Saints for a few years and by the time October 2019 comes around we’ll be singing this with gusto…
